Episode 21: NANCE! (Therapy Pt. 2 with Jody Smith)
NANCE! WELCOME TO THE SQUAD.
This week the girls interview their therapist Jody Smith, Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC.
Jody covers her professional history. She explains that in pursuing therapy as a career, it’s helped to understand the addiction in her own past and help others.
Kate and Jes are always suggesting therapy as a major recovery tool, and Jody shines a light on why, and how it is so important. She explains that therapy is here to get you to want to make small healthy changes in your life in a clinical way, different than the support you’ll receive in a traditional recovery (AA) program.
She breaks down different kinds of therapy including; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which she recommends for those of us in recovery.
Jody advises that finding an empathetic therapist that clicks with you will take some time. She notes that clients should wait about 6 weeks to decide if it’s a fit. In therapy, you’ll sometimes love your therapist, hate your therapist, and even sometimes feel like you’re not doing anything. That is all part of the treatment plan.
Things worth mentioning:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
EMDR
Prioritize therapy for the important self-care tool that it is. Show up. Honesty is key.
