Episode 25: Sober on Social Media
Whelp, Spring has sprung and Mother’s Day is around the corner.
I wanted to find out from Jes what her dynamic is with her mom, and how sobriety plays into that.
Jes’s mom had her when she was young, and they had (and have) a very close relationship. While she’s always had a tumultuous relationship with her dad, sometimes that affected her relationship with mom.
Jes tried to hide her drinking from her mom for years limiting the amount of booze she’d have when she was around family…saving her binging for a different audience. Her mom hates booze, as she has a family history of alcohol and substance abuse….that’s pretty understandable.
When Jes came clean on the podcast about her cocaine use, that definitely offended her mom. But, that’s water under the bridge now, and they’ve since hugged it out. While this tends to stress Jes out at times, she knows her mom means well.
For me, my mom’s been dead for almost 15 years. I almost always forget it even IS Mother’s Day.
Losing my mom was a huge contributor to my drinking, at times I thought (and maybe secretly wished) I’d just die and go be with her. I had extreme anxiety and it was crippling and paralyzing. Drinking helped me escape from those realities and allowed me to actually experience “fun”.
I still wonder what my mom would be like today. As a person in the world, as a woman, and also as my mom. Would I even like her? Would she be a Trump supporter? Who would I be with that influence in my life?
Anyways, I AM blessed enough to have a bomb step-mom tho. So cheers to you, Kathy.
